Job Description :
R&D Consultant R&D Advisory team
The Company
This is a Global consulting firm with offices in 18 countries and over 500 consultants. R&D Advisory is one of the major service lines and helps businesses to secure financing for scientific and technological innovation.
The R&D Advisory team consists of finance and industry consultants who work with a number of high profile clients (Fortune 500 and FTSE 100, CAC 40companies).
The Role
Based in the London, the team are looking for experienced and enthusiastic individuals to be
part of a growing and dynamic National & International practice. This provides a unique opportunity
to specialise in a specific discipline and to gain exposure to a wide variety of industries.
The R&D consultant will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver maximum value to the
client. The team works with businesses whose operations include some aspects of research and
development (R&D) and helps them to benefit from the generous tax relief available under UK and EU tax legislation.
The role involves working with the clients technical staff to identify areas of their activities that qualify as R&D under UK tax legislation; these assessments are sometimes expanded to include international sites and legislation. The next step is to prepare a report on the clients activities, in terms sufficiently clear to be understood by persons of a non-scientific/engineering background.
The R&D consultant will focus, in particular, on the technical aspects of the clients R&D in order to
provide an argued justification for including the activities within the report. However, the technical
consultant will have an important role to play in the initial selling of the project by demonstrating
the credibility of the team in that particular specialist area. In particular, the R&D consultant will
have the following responsibilities:
Activities Include
Interviewing senior in-house engineering/scientific development staff in order to gain an
understanding of their activities so as to permit an assessment to be made as to whether the
activity is R&D for tax purposes.
Preparing structured reports describing the activities in laymans terms. The objective of these reports is to set out the argument for the activity being considered R&D.
Assisting with business development activities, this is likely to include meeting both finance and
engineering staff at various companies.
Education
Degree in either Engineering, IT, Electronics, Computing or related discipline from a leading
University
Postgraduate degree (MSc/MBA/PhD) preferable
The Individual
Good knowledge and understanding of scientific or engineering development (in any scientific or engineering discipline).
Ability to talk knowledgeably with researchers/developers and translate what they are doing
into plain language.
Excellent project management skills
Intuitively inquisitive and interested in operational activities in various industry sectors
Excellent excel spreadsheet abilities including pivot tables and data cleansing.
Excellent problems solving and organisational skill
Advanced interview skills and presenting ability
Strong communication skills both written and oral
Ability to work in a team based environment, flexible and a committed team player
Excellent English language skills (both spoken & written). Knowledge of any other major
European language would be a plus.
The role is based in London and will involve some travel (may include overnight stay).
UK/EU nationals the company is not in a position to sponsor for UK work permits
